Grenfell’s Legacy Reflect & Progress Conference (online)

Online – Free / Optional Donation – Book now.

Safety and quality, or rather the failure of safety and quality, is the most crucial issue facing the construction industry today. Several years after the tragic events at Grenfell Tower, considerable developments have been made in building safety legislation at both the UK and Scottish government levels.

We have assembled this conference to discuss building and fire safety developments across the sector. Beginning with a keynote presentation from CIOB Past President Paul Nash on building safety legislation, the event will cover building safety developments from several perspectives. A series of expert speakers will discuss policy development on cladding remediation in Scotland, new modern methods of fire safety, early detection of defects, technology solutions and construction law.

Our speakers will be:

  • Paul Nash, CIOB Past President: Paul is Chair of the CIOB’s Quality Implementation Group. In 2017, he chaired the working group on procurement as part of the Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety led by Dame Judith Hackitt.
  • Eddie Tuttle, CIOB Director of Policy, Research & Public Affairs: Eddie is co-chair of the CIOB’s Quality Implementation Group and leads the interaction with the UK Government for CIOB’s response to Grenfell and the implementation of building safety legislation in the UK.
  • Jocelyne Fleming, CIOB Policy & Public Affairs Officer – Scotland: Leading on the CIOB’s policy and public affairs work in Scotland, Jocelyne will provide an update on the CIOB’s engagement on the Housing (Cladding Remediation) (Scotland) Act, Single Building Assessments, what is on the horizon for Scotland’s cladding remediation programme and wider building safety policies.
  • Rory Buckingham, ASSA Abloy: The ASSA Abloy team will discuss electrically controlled fire and escape doors designed to protect from fire and limit the spread of flames.
  • Paul McLaughlin & Alan Bryant, Multivista: Multivista uses cutting-edge visual technology to revolutionize how projects are managed before, during, and after construction. It provides this pioneering product and is a global provider of information technology solutions. Multivista will allow you to see behind walls, ceilings, and even slabs to avoid any unforeseen costs and will demonstrate this in its presentation.
  • Alasdair Perry, a member of the Industry Competence Committee and the British Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association, will discuss the impact of the Grenfell Phase 2 report on the fire suppression industry and why competence in the industry is so important to BAFSA.
  • Katherine Dorran – Construction Law – DWF LLP: Katherine will give a lawyer’s perspective and reflect on the developments. There will be an introduction to construction with a quick walk-through on parties in construction projects, legislation relevant to construction projects, and construction documents.

Members: gain 3 CIOB CPD points when you reflect on the ethical aspects of your learning from this activity.
